Homelessness and poverty
Poverty is the main cause of homelessness, with 65% of people seeking assistance from specialist homelessness services did so because of financial difficulty or housing. Almost 2 million Australians live in poverty. “Poverty is the state or condition in which a person or community lacks the financial resources and essentials to enjoy a minimum standard of life and well-being that's considered acceptable in society.” Majority of people who enter a homeless shelter use it only once, however, a small percentage of people use it multiple times. They need more intensive help to break the cycle of poverty, in both the form of longer term housing assistance and services that respond to their specific needs. |
The poverty cycle is a “set of events by which poverty, once started, is likely to continue unless there is outside intervention.”
